Upon looking out at the marriages before Him, Jesus saw a woman with a bruised soul standing beside an indifferent man wielding weapons of control. And the Religious Leaders watched Him to see whether He would rescue her from the indifferent man, so that they might find a reason to accuse her.
But He knew their thoughts, and He said to the woman with the broken heart, “Come and stand here.” And the woman stepped away from the indifferent man and stood next to Christ.
And Jesus said to the Religious Leaders, “I ask you, when considering a married woman and her plight, is it lawful to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it?”
And after looking around at them all He said to the woman, “Give Me your heart.”
“Happy is the man who does not go in the company of sinners, or take his place in the way of evil-doers, or in the seat of those who do not give honour to the Lord.” (Psalm 1:1)
“Leave the presence of a fool, Or you will not discern words of knowledge.” (Proverbs 14:7)
“Woe to the rebellious children,” declares the LORD, “Who execute a plan, but not Mine, And make an alliance, but not of My Spirit, In order to add sin to sin.” (Isaiah 30:1)
“For My people are foolish, They know Me not; They are stupid children And have no understanding They are shrewd to do evil, But to do good they do not know.” (Jeremiah 4:22)
“For a fool speaks nonsense, And his heart inclines toward wickedness: To practice ungodliness and to speak error against the LORD, To keep the hungry person unsatisfied And to withhold drink from the thirsty” (Isaiah 32:6)
“Do not speak in the hearing of a fool, For he will despise the wisdom of your words” (Proverbs 23:9)
And as the woman turned away from the indifferent man, took the hand of Jesus, and walked away with Him, her heart was restored.
But the Religious Leaders were filled with fury and discussed with one another what they might do to the woman who would dare to walk away from her destructive marriage–and their control.
